High School Seniors Get Creative in Warning About the Dangers of Drunk Driving

Drunk driving remains one of the greatest dangers on U.S. roadways – with nearly 29 people in the U.S. dying as a result of alcohol-related motor vehicle collisions each day. That’s equal to one drunk driving fatality every 50 minutes, according to NHTSA. With such alarming risks, educating young motorists about the dangers of impaired driving is one of the most powerful tools we have when it comes to bringing those numbers down. In Wisconsin, however, a group of high school seniors stepped into the role of educators themselves, warning their peers and community that drunk driving can come with terrible and tragic consequences.

In what’s being called one of the best senior pranks local police have ever seen, seniors at Cumberland High School in Cumberland, Wisconsin found a way to not only celebrate their final week of school, but also send an important message to other graduating seniors, students, and residents throughout the region.

Their “prank?” It involved crashing a car into a school building wall.

Or at least that’s what it appeared to look like. The group of seniors actually created an optical illusion to make it appear as though a vehicle being driven by a drunk driver crashed into a school building. They used half of a junkyard vehicle, masking tape, caution tape, and loose bricks strewn about the scene without causing any damage to school property. All in a matter of eight minutes.

Although the school district announced that the fake crash scene had caused some initial shock, administers and local police say it’s one of the best pranks they’ve ever seen. What’s more, the creative prank provides a sobering reminder that drunk driving can have serious consequences. Not only would the driver and any passenger in the fake crash have suffered serious injuries, if not death, the seniors also point out that drunk driving can place tremendous strain on parents and families who have to deal with injuries, harm suffered by victims, and the criminal justice system. The message of drunk driving being a major “party foul” is one all motorists can take to heart.

Drunk Driving Accidents & Victims’ Rights

As a personal injury law firm that fights for victims of motor vehicle accidents, our team at Levinson Axelrod, P.A. has handled many drunk driving accident cases – many of which had profound and life-altering consequences for victims and their loved ones. Although drunk driving wrecks typically result in arrests and criminal charges against a driver, victims should understand that those criminal proceedings concern only whether or not a driver is guilty of committing a crime, and do not provide a viable source of compensation for their losses.

To recover damages incurred in a drunk driving wreck, victims will need to pursue lawsuits in civil court, which are handled separately from criminal cases. These personal injury and wrongful death claims allow victims to hold the responsible party accountable for their negligent and careless acts, and financially liable for the damages they suffered, including their pain and suffering, lost income, medical expenses, future damages, and more. These cases, like the Cumberland senior prank, also remind the public that drunk driving should never be tolerated.
