Flemington's Next Chapter — And Why It Matters to Us

In 1935, Flemington gained worldwide attention as the location of the “Trial of the Century,” the prosecution of Bruno Richard Hauptmann for the kidnapping and murder of Charles Lindbergh Jr. The proceedings, held at the Hunterdon County Courthouse, brought reporters, photographers, and spectators from around the world to this small New Jersey town, placing Flemington at the center of one of the most closely followed criminal trials in American history. That moment gave Flemington a permanent place in the nation’s legal history and remains one of the defining chapters in the borough’s story.

At Levinson Axelrod, the motto is not just something we put on a letterhead: “Your Neighbors. Your Lawyers.” It is the whole point. Our firm has represented injured New Jerseyans since 1939, and our Flemington office reflects a genuine, long-standing commitment to the people and places we know.

When something significant is happening in Flemington, we pay attention because we are not just observers here. We are part of the town. For drivers coming in on Route 31, our electric sign is one of the first things they see — a little news, a little wisdom, and proof that Flemington is still a place with its own personality. Our lawyers in Flemington are not just passing through for a case once in a while. We are part of the local legal community, and that local connection matters.

The biggest development now underway is the redevelopment of the historic Union Hotel and Courthouse Square, a project years in the making that finally appears to be taking real shape. Marriott currently lists The Union Hotel, Flemington, a Tribute Portfolio Hotel as opening in early summer 2026. That opening is the centerpiece of something much larger.

The published plans call for a 100-room hotel, 206 residential apartments, and approximately 22,000 square feet of retail space, all anchored around Courthouse Square. For a town like Flemington, that is no small thing. A healthy downtown draws people in instead of letting them drive past. It supports restaurants, shops, and small businesses. It makes the borough more of a destination and less of a detour. Done right, this project will not just improve a few blocks. It will change the daily feel of the town.

Flemington also has something many towns do not: history worth preserving. The Hunterdon County Historic Courthouse is not just an old building. It is the site of the 1935 Lindbergh kidnapping trial, a moment woven into the borough’s civic identity in a way that has never really faded. Flemington earned its place in the national story, and that still matters.

For a law firm, that history resonates. Our history has grown with New Jersey's history. At Levinson Axelrod, we understand that representing our neighbors is not abstract. It is local. It is personal. And it carries responsibility. In a town with this kind of legal history, that means something. As Flemington moves into its next chapter, we are proud to remain what we have long been: your neighbors and your lawyers.
