What Causes Truck Tires to Blow?
The companies that manufacture truck tires pay close attention to their products in order to better understand their faults and what problems need to be addressed going forward. While many of the specific numbers are kept secret, these companies have released information about the most common causes of truck tire blowouts.
- Overinflated Tires: While keeping truck tires inflated above the recommended limit may allow drivers to increase the carrying capacity of their vehicle, it also puts additional stress on the internal components like the fabric, rubber, steel, composites, etc. The longer these tires are left dangerously inflated, the more likely they are to catastrophically fail.
- Underinflated Tires: There are a number of reasons why a tire could dip below the recommended limit, including traveling to colder climates, an unidentified leak and general wear and tear negatively impacting their ability to maintain air pressure. No matter what caused the tire to become underinflated, the longer it stays that way, the more stress is put on its internal components – underinflated tires also have additional surface area, which increases the speed of wear and tear during travel.
- Overloaded Vehicles: Federal regulations limit the amount an 18-wheeler can weigh to 80,000 pounds so the vehicles aren’t put under a dangerous amount of stress during travel. Drivers, manufacturers and trucking companies may attempt to squeeze as much product in the back of their vehicles as possible in order to maximize the value of each trip, but they do so at the risk of everyone on the road, including the truck driver.
- Dangerous Road Conditions: A significant portion of the roads across America are filled with potholes, cracks and uneven surfaces. The average truck driver covers anywhere from 2,000 to 3,000 miles every week, and the constant beating the road gives their truck’s tires takes its toll and can speed up the rate that they wear down.
- Wear and Tear: Everything breaks down over time, even the tires created to help carry 80,000-pound machines across the nation’s roads. Without constant maintenance, these products become increasingly likely to burst.
