New Jersey governor John Corzine has signed into law a piece of legislation which strengthens New Jersey’s seat belt requirements.
Under the old law, all occupants of motor vehicles were required to wear seat belts, except for adults sitting in rear seats. The new law requires all occupants of the vehicle to wear safety belts at all times, regardless of age or where they are sitting.
Although the law is being praised for protecting vehicle occupants, some critics are accusing the law of not doing enough. Under the law, failing to wear a seat belt is a secondary offense, meaning that police officers cannot pull over cars for seat belt infractions, and can only write tickets if the driver has been pulled over for another offense.
