New Jersey holiday travel on the rise

Posted on Wednesday, November 23rd, 2011 at 2:28 pm

It is estimated that 1 million New Jerseyans will be traveling by motor vehicle this Thanksgiving weekend. The Thanksgiving weekend, which spans from Wednesday to Sunday, is expected to be jam packed with families on the road.

AAA released figures relating to holiday travel in the state and those numbers show that travel by motor vehicle is up 2 percent from last year. Having more vehicles on the road gives way to potential for more accidents caused by reckless drivers.

Due to the high volume of travelers, the state has halted all construction projects until the holiday weekend comes to a close. People traveling by New Jersey Transit should be aware of the altered schedule for Thanksgiving.

DoD General Inspector discovers toxic chemical exposure

Posted on Wednesday, October 12th, 2011 at 9:51 pm

The Department of Defense’s General Inspector found that U.S. soldiers and civilian government employees were exposed to toxic substance at an Iraqi water treatment plant. Nearly a thousand soldiers and employees were exposed to sodium dichromate for five months.

In a new report, the General Inspector blames the contractor company Kellogg, Brown, and Root for failing to follow safety and health standards which caused workers to be exposed to the toxin for an extended period of time. Sodium dichromate can cause cancer as well as skin and breathing problems.

The Oregon National Guard has filed a lawsuit against KBR, claiming the company knowingly exposed them to sodium dichromate. KBR says those claims are not true.

Six charged in mortgage fraud scheme

Posted on Wednesday, October 5th, 2011 at 10:31 pm

Six people were charged this week for conducting a $25 million mortgage fraud scheme that stole money from financial institutions and mortgage lenders. Of the people charged, many were lawyers, real estate agents, and loan officers. They face charges of conspiracy to commit wire and bank fraud, a charge that could carry 30 years in prison.

The individuals are accused of giving lenders fraudulent mortgage applications and putting down fake information on loan applications. They also attempted to cover up how much money was disbursed during property closings. The scheme cost lending institutions millions of dollars after the conspirators failed to make payments on their loans.

According to court documents, the mortgage fraud went undetected for nearly nine years.

Listeria outbreak in cantaloupe

Posted on Friday, September 30th, 2011 at 7:40 pm

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention are calling it one of the deadliest breakouts of listeria in the past decade; over a dozen people have died and seventy-two have fallen ill in eighteen states due to contaminated cantaloupes.

The cantaloupes affected were grown by Jensen Farms in Colorado and the farm has since recalled its entire 2011 crop. A federal investigation is looking into Jensen Farms, searching for causes of the outbreak.

Experts expect the number of illnesses and deaths to increase since listeria can have a two month incubation period before it develops into listerosis in the body. Symptoms of listeria infection include high fevers, diarrhea, body aches, and nausea.

Last 9/11 wrongful death lawsuit settled

Posted on Wednesday, September 21st, 2011 at 9:44 pm

The last wrongful death lawsuit filed on behalf of a 31 year-old man, who was on United Airlines Flight 175, has been settled in a Federal District Court in Manhattan.

The lawsuit was filed by the family in 2002 against United Airlines and the security company, Huntleigh USA. The family argued that the companies did not have appropriate security, had a history of security failures, inexperienced screeners, and failed to heed advice from an United Airlines executive to improve training and staffing. The defendants claimed that all security systems and checkpoints were up-to-date and working according to government standards, and that they could have in no way prevented the attack that the federal government was not aware of.

The legal settlements have not been made public, but United and Huntleigh both stated that they were pleased to have resolved the case.

More than 800,000 vehicles recalled

Posted on Friday, September 16th, 2011 at 7:45 pm

According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, Honda has issued a recall for 311,000 Pilot SUVs and Subaru is recalling 500,000 vehicles of various models.

Honda Pilots made between 2009-2011 are being recalled for a possible seatbelt defect. The manufacturer discovered the SUVs could have missing or incomplete stitching on the front lap seatbelts, which could cause them to disconnect from the anchor webbing. In an accident, occupants could not be properly secured, which increases the risk of injury.

2002-2007 Imprezas, 2003-2008 Foresters, and 2005-2006 Saab 9-2xes are being recalled after Subaru received reports of the front control arms corroding and breaking. In two cases, the drivers lost control of their vehicles. Fortunately, there were no injuries or accidents. Subaru Outbacks and Legacies made between 2010-2011 are being recalled for a potential fire hazard in the wiper motors. If the motors become overheated, they could catch on fire.
