According to hospital records, the number of dog bites in the United States have increased dramatically over the past 16 years.
Each year there are approximately 4.5 million dog bites and some of these bites need emergency treatment. The number of hospital admissions caused from a dog attack have increased from 5,100 in 1993 to 9,500 in 2008.
According to the U.S. Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, there are 866 people taken to the hospital every day in 2008 from a dog attack. Twenty-six people a day required hospital stay after the bite.
