New study finds toxic chemicals in childcare products may cause autism

In a recent study in which baby and toddler products were tested for toxic chemicals, it was found that 80 percent of the items tested did contain toxic chemicals, such as brominated flame retardants. The chemicals that were found have been linked to autism and cancer in children.
Brominated flame retardant is a chemical that was added to many household products starting in the eighties because it reduces the flammability of products. However, experts say this chemical can be extremely harmful to children. While adults may not be affected by the chemicals in products, children are because of their small body masses and the fact that they often put their mouths on products.
Many people are pushing for chemical safety legislation to be passed that would allow the Environmental Protection Agency to have more control over the chemical regulation of products.
