The Department of Defense’s General Inspector found that U.S. soldiers and civilian government employees were exposed to toxic substance at an Iraqi water treatment plant. Nearly a thousand soldiers and employees were exposed to sodium dichromate for five months.
In a new report, the General Inspector blames the contractor company Kellogg, Brown, and Root for failing to follow safety and health standards which caused workers to be exposed to the toxin for an extended period of time. Sodium dichromate can cause cancer as well as skin and breathing problems.
The Oregon National Guard has filed a lawsuit against KBR, claiming the company knowingly exposed them to sodium dichromate. KBR says those claims are not true.
