Living with Spinal Cord Damage

The spinal cord can be compared to an information superhighway; it allows information to be transmitted between the brain and all other parts of the body. When it is damaged, the flow of this information can be interrupted, potentially resulting in disability and other health problems. These problems can be temporary or permanent, depending on the nature of the injury.

If you or a member of your family has suffered from such an injury, you understand the far-reaching consequences it can have for your health, career, and personal life. At the offices of New Jersey spinal cord injury attorneys Levinson Axelrod, P.A., we believe that no one should have to live with such difficulties due to another party’s negligence. Call our offices today at 800-346-5529.

The Consequences of Spinal Cord Damage

An injury to the spinal cord can be either partial, meaning that nerve damage is limited, or it can be complete, meaning that the nerves have been fully severed. People with partial spinal cord injuries retain some level of sensation or functioning below the injury site; people with complete injuries will lose all sensation and functioning in the affected limbs.

The symptoms of spinal cord damage also depend on the location of the injury. As a general rule, symptoms will be present at and below the site of the injury. For example, an injury at the base of the neck can cause loss of functioning in all four limbs, as well as impairing cardiac and respiratory symptoms. Tragically, some people with these injuries must remain on ventilators for the rest of their lives.

Most spinal cord injuries are located farther down on the spine, however. These injuries can cause loss of sensation and/or functioning in the arms, legs, or both. They can also interfere with important bodily functions such as temperature regulation, abdominal muscle movement, and bladder control. Sadly, these injuries often require costly treatments, long-term therapies, and accommodations in patients’ homes and workplaces.

If your life has been affected by a spinal cord injury due to another party’s careless actions, you may be able to win compensation for your related losses. Our New Jersey spinal cord injury lawyers are ready to fight for you.
