First Aid for Concussions
Concussions are the most common form of head injury; by definition, they are relatively mild and not a direct threat to a person’s life. However, the symptoms of a concussion can be serious and long-lasting, especially if the patient has suffered concussions before. Anyone who has suffered a significant head injury needs professional medical evaluation.
The leading causes of concussions are car accidents, sports injuries, and falls. If you have been involved in a harmful accident due to another party’s reckless actions, you could be entitled to financial compensation. Responding to a Head Injury
A person may be suffering from a concussion if he or she has suffered a blow to the head and is showing symptoms like:
- Confusion or disorientation
- Loss of consciousness
- Blurry or otherwise disturbed vision
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Short-term memory loss
The symptoms of a concussion will generally resolve on their own within hours or a few days. The patient may need no more treatment than rest and a cold damp cloth at the injury site. However, an injury that appears to be a concussion may actually involve more significant damage, such as bleeding within the brain or a fracture of the skull.
A patient may be in danger and will need immediate medical care if he or she shows symptoms like:
- Loss of consciousness lasting longer than two minutes
- Fatigue or muscle weakness
- Confusion that does not resolve within a few minutes
- Losing consciousness again after waking up once
- Persistent vomiting or pain
Anyone who has suffered a head injury needs to be evaluated by a medical professional. However, a person with any of the above symptoms needs emergency treatment. A serious head injury can become debilitating or even fatal if it is not treated in a timely manner.
