Brain Injuries and Memory Loss
Damage to the brain can have far-reaching consequences in a person’s life that are difficult for doctors to predict. One of the more common problems reported by victims of traumatic brain injury (TBI) is memory loss. This problem can range from temporary memory loss with no lasting effects to a lifelong and highly disruptive disorder.
If you or a loved one has suffered from a head injury due to another person or entity’s careless actions, attorneys of Levinson Axelrod, P.A. can fight for you. Our New Jersey head injury attorneys are committed to thorough and effective legal representation. To learn more, call us today at 1-800-346-5529.
Living with Memory Impairments
The type and extent of memory loss suffered by a TBI patient will depend on the location and extent of the damage. Some memory-related problems that a head injury victim may experience include:
- Temporary amnesia – Sometimes people are unable to recall the events immediately before and after their injury; this is a common problem among concussion patients. However, this form of memory loss is very limited and rarely has long-term consequences.
- Short-term memory loss – Short-term memory is the ability to recall things that have recently happened or information you have recently learned. Unfortunately, this can be a persistent and very intrusive problem for TBI victims. In extreme cases, they may even develop anterograde amnesia – an inability to form any new memories after the injury.
- Long-term memory loss – Long-term memory loss is the inability to recall events or information from your past. A head injury victim may suffer from a diminished ability to form new long-term memories, or may lose memories from his or her past.
- Confabulation – Some victims of memory loss caused by brain damage also suffer from confabulation, which is the creation of false memories to “fill in the gaps” in a person’s memory. People who suffer from this problem may misremember certain details or even create bizarre stories about their pasts. They are not aware that these memories are false, and will not even notice obvious contradictions between their false memories and the truth.
Conditions like these can limit a person’s ability to work, his or her quality of life, and relationships with loved ones. Our New Jersey brain injury lawyers work hard to help head injury victims win the full compensation they need for such losses.
